UPDATE ON DEVONSHIRE GREEN PROJECTS

1. DESIGN/LAYOUT/BUILD PROJECT

A follow-up meeting was held on 4 April 1998 and the final design plan agreed on. Concrete was the unanimous choice. The layout comprises loads of ramps, steps, blocks, curves, transitions and a driveway. So, something for everyone and plenty to please the crowds. Chris Bailey and Simon Ogden from the City Council will be making the technical drawings and submitting them for planning permission.

All WAP members will have a chance to see the final drawings before they are sent off. The group is now in the process of gathering bids and selecting a contractor. Anybody whose gone down this route before and who can recommend builders or contractors, please get in touch. If all goes smoothly, we anticipate building work will begin in July or August this year.

2. EVENTS/PUBLICITY PROJECT

The group are looking at a mini-event in a couple of months time to celebrate the site, before building work begins, as a taster for a bigger event later in the summer. Depending on what's available in the budget, it will involve ramps, a bit of a street course, live music and live graffiti. Watch this space for further developments and details.

3. FUNDRAISING PROJECT

This is the group on which all the others depend, to raise the moolah for them to do their stuff. Anybody with hot tips for likely sponsors or donors, please get in touch with us. Every little helps, and we need a lot!
It is with great shock that we report that our funding application to the South Yorkshire Police Authority CIP Fund has been turned down! After a good initial response and much encouraging feedback, we received the knockback letter today (20.6.98). No specific reason was given, just that the fund was swamped with applications. This is a sad and unexpected blow, not unlike slamming on a stair rail with your legs splayed. After a period of therapeutic swearing and drinking to forget - it will be back to the drawing board to start over again.

The City Council have produced a technical drawing based on the suggestions and sketches from all the skaters, inliners and BMXers at the Design/Layout/Build meetings. The park will be built in concrete and the plans will now be put out to tender. Anybody who can recommend a concrete contractor or builder, or anybody with park building experience, please get in touch. The full size plans are also available for viewing at SUMO Skateshop in the FORUM Building on Division Street or contact Sue via WAP.
